				<title>Lake Norman Firefighter is honored as Iredell County Firefighter of the Year</title>
				<link>http://lknvfd.org/index.cfm/2010/3/28/Lake-Norman-Firefighter-is-honored-as-Iredell-County-Firefighter-of-the-Year</link>
				<description>

				Wesley Rigdon has been a member of Lake Norman Fire Department for two and a half years. Saturday night was the biggest night of his young career. Wesley was honored as the AY Neel Iredell County Firefighter of the Year. His nomination mentioned several calls Wesley responded to and his qualifications he has worked hard to get. It also made note of the time devoted to the department when someone has to be around for public service events at the station. The award itself is named after a founding member of Lake Norman Volunteer Fire Department, AY Neel. Mr Neel was active with the department and with Piedmont Mutual Insurance who sponsors the award. Upon his death in 2006, the award was named after Mr. Neel. Wesley is the first Lake Norman member to be honored as the county&apos;s top firefighter since Eddie Neel won the award in the mid 1980&apos;s. On behalf or Lake Norman Fire Department, we want to congratulate Wesley on his achievement.

				<link>http://lknvfd.org/index.cfm/2010/3/17/Woodland-Heights-again-wins-county-Fire-Quiz-Bowl</link>
				<description>

				Woodland Heights Elementary won the Irededll county Fire Quiz Bowl recently in Statesville. Woodland Heights, the reigning state champion, was coached by Lake Norman VFD Firefighter Neil Baker. The Fire Quiz Bowl is a trivia type game that asks school children fire safety questions. Neil&apos;s brother Mark Baker, also a Lake Norman firefighter, coached Lake Norman Elementary to a fourth place finish. Congratulations and thank you to the students and coaches of this year&apos;s teams.

				<description>

				Visitors to Lake Norman&apos;s station may notice the yellow pipes hanging from the ceilling. This is the new Plymovent system recently installed. The Plymovent is an air filtration system that captures the exhaust from trucks and safely removes it from the area. The system was puchased with $61,750 from a FEMA grant. Lake Norman VFD received this grant thanks to many hours of work by Robert Burtsell.

				<title>Woodland Heights Elementary Wins State Title</title>
				<link>http://lknvfd.org/index.cfm/2009/5/6/Woodland-Heights-Elementary-Wins-State-Title</link>
				<description>

				For a few tense minutes, it looked like the state crown would go to a team of fourth-graders from Mecklenburg County. But a couple of correct responses in the late stages pulled Woodland Heights Elementary even with Victory Christian School, sending the Fire and Life Safety Bowl title into a three-question tie-breaker.

Each team answered one question correctly, bringing the match down to the final question.

Woodland Heights buzzed in on the final question and got it right to bring the state Fire and Life Safety Quiz Bowl trophy home to Mooresville to be placed beside the county trophy the team won in March.

A 20-year-old man died Sunday night after trying to rescue a dog inside his parents&apos; burning house in Mooresville. The Lake Norman Volunteer Fire Department received a call at 4:21 p.m. about a house on fire on Wildiris Drive, west of Interstate 77 off Brawley School Road. The fire was out by 5:45 p.m., an Iredell Sheriff&apos;s dispatcher said Sunday night.

Neighbors say the 20-year-old was outside when he was asked if anyone was inside. He said only the dog and ran inside to rescue the animal.

Firefighters had to carry him outside. He was unconscious when an ambulance took him to Lake Norman Regional Hospital, neighbors said. Late Sunday, WCNC-TV, the Observer&apos;s news partner, reported that he had died. The dog died, too.

Update May 6, 2009

Cause of Fatal Mooresville Fire Undetermined

Fire officials said this morning they weren&apos;t able to determine what caused Sunday&apos;s fire on Wildiris Drive that killed Joshua Waynick, 20, when he went into his home to try to rescue the family&apos;s dog. &lt;p&gt; Waynick was outside the home when the fire started in the master bedroom, Iredell County Deputy Fire Marshall David Souther said. His parents were out of town at the time. &lt;p&gt; Autopsy results are pending at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, Souther said. The dog also died in the fire.

				Cornelius-Lemley Fire and Rescue will have to wait a bit longer to start training on its newest piece of equipment - and that also means one other Lake Norman-area fire department has put its training plans on hold.

A $400,000 fireboat delivered to Cornelius-Lemley Fire and Rescue in December will be going back to the California manufacturer&apos;s plant for upgrades because the boat did not pass the department&apos;s shakedown tests on Lake Norman.

The fire department received the 37-foot Harbor Guard Boats fireboat - the first of its model sold - on Dec. 13 after flying out for the boat&apos;s sea trials on the Pacific Ocean.
