A 20-year-old man died Sunday night after trying to rescue a dog inside his parents&apos; burning house in Mooresville. The Lake Norman Volunteer Fire Department received a call at 4:21 p.m. about a house on fire on Wildiris Drive, west of Interstate 77 off Brawley School Road. The fire was out by 5:45 p.m., an Iredell Sheriff&apos;s dispatcher said Sunday night.

Neighbors say the 20-year-old was outside when he was asked if anyone was inside. He said only the dog and ran inside to rescue the animal.

Firefighters had to carry him outside. He was unconscious when an ambulance took him to Lake Norman Regional Hospital, neighbors said. Late Sunday, WCNC-TV, the Observer&apos;s news partner, reported that he had died. The dog died, too.

Update May 6, 2009

Cause of Fatal Mooresville Fire Undetermined

Fire officials said this morning they weren&apos;t able to determine what caused Sunday&apos;s fire on Wildiris Drive that killed Joshua Waynick, 20, when he went into his home to try to rescue the family&apos;s dog. &lt;p&gt; Waynick was outside the home when the fire started in the master bedroom, Iredell County Deputy Fire Marshall David Souther said. His parents were out of town at the time. &lt;p&gt; Autopsy results are pending at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, Souther said. The dog also died in the fire.

				Cornelius-Lemley Fire and Rescue will have to wait a bit longer to start training on its newest piece of equipment - and that also means one other Lake Norman-area fire department has put its training plans on hold.

A $400,000 fireboat delivered to Cornelius-Lemley Fire and Rescue in December will be going back to the California manufacturer&apos;s plant for upgrades because the boat did not pass the department&apos;s shakedown tests on Lake Norman.

The fire department received the 37-foot Harbor Guard Boats fireboat - the first of its model sold - on Dec. 13 after flying out for the boat&apos;s sea trials on the Pacific Ocean.

				<description>

				For one Mooresville couple, 2008 will be remembered as the year they &quot;stayed alive.&quot;

&quot;It&apos;s not a bad thing when you survive a tragedy,&quot; said Doris Nash, whose multi-million dollar home with husband Michael burned to the ground in the early morning hours of Christmas Day.

Choosing to remain optimistic escaping the blaze unharmed before their three-story home in The Point collapsed Doris said she may never know what ignited the flames that decimated their house, belongings and at least two vehicles, yielding $3.2 million in damages.

				A fire that started Tuesday on an island on Lake Norman is expected to burn for a few days, officials said.

Rangers from the N.C. Division of Forest Resources have been letting the fire burn on an 18-acre uninhabited island because it doesn&apos;t pose a threat to people or properties, said Brian Haines, a spokesman for the division in Raleigh.

The Hope at The Point Foundation gave the department a $10,000 grant and the H.B. Ebert Charitable Foundation donated $17,000.

The new rescue tools include a glass master, which cuts glass out of a car windshield allowing firefighters to get a victim out of a car; hydraulic extensions that can roll back a dash; the jaws of life, which can cut through solid steel to free a victim and a spreader that can force open a smashed car door and take it off the hinges. The department also bought a portable generator to use at accident scenes. The generator would allow several pieces of equipment to be used at the same time.

Sparks from the car engulfed the home in flames.

No one in the home was injured, but a firefighter suffered a minor injury.

Ebert, trustee of the H.B. Ebert Charitable Foundation, said the experience taught her the value of local fire department services, after firefighters from eight departments attempted to save her home.
